Poem: I want to be a man who

Who I wouldn’t want to be?

I want to be a man who can build, calloused

hands from hammering,

I want to be a man who can paint, the

kind who sees the universe in a flower petal,

I want to be a man who can love, deep

love the kind that can drive you mad,

I want to be a man who can fight, so

that I can be peaceful and not harmless,

I want to be a man whose initial reaction isn’t fear, the

kind who acts first with commitment,

I want to be a man who adventures, on

a whim, on a feel, on a desire, change everything,

I want to be a man of importance, someone

who you may reply upon,

I want to be a man of my own thoughts,

thinking for myself and not mouthing the words of others,

I want to be a man of action, the

passive in me strangled to death,

I want to be…I want to be…I want to be…

a man.

Who am I?

A bit of this, a bit of that,

some of what I want to be,

much of what I don’t,

independent and free,

the kind of man,

I wish to be.

What are you doing?

I am:

trying,

failing,

attempting,

changing,

repeating,

creating,

indulging,

hurting,

inching,

regressing,

growing,

waiting,

holding,

becoming,

all at once.

The kind of man,

who will,

one day,

someday,

will become what he is becoming.
